Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages are comprised of the reception building located in the Historic Swedo House, the original hunting lodge and farmhouse, built between 1906 and 1908. The 13 luxury cottages were added in 2021and are adjacent to the Karen Golf & Country Club, including golf, tennis and squash. Our cottages are located 20 miles from downtown Nairobi, in the wealthy suburb of Karen.

 

Centrally and conveniently located, it is a short walk from the Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Bead Factory and an easy 10 minutes’ drive from the popular Daphne Sheldrick Elephant & Rhino Orphanage as well as the Giraffe Centre. Just 10 minutes away, is also the Nairobi National Park where one can spot the big game with the city skyline in the background.

 

Butterflies and birds are seen around the gardens among the sweet-smelling frangipani and brightly colored bougainvillea. Diners have a choice of different areas for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Newly build and modernly designed Hattons Dining and Bar is a stylishly furnished indoor restaurant, cozy bar with a fireplace and huge skylights. Dining is available in the adjacent pergola and garden right next to the beautiful, heated pool. Additionally, in-house guests can enjoy room service.

 

To assure our guests have a pleasant stay; we renovated all the cottages in 2021. The skylights in the bathroom allow for natural lighting and give the illusion of being an outdoor space. The bathrooms offer double vanities, a bench and large shower cubicles. The wooden flooring and high ceilings were sanded to their natural color making a sense of warmth and calmness. The spacious cottages were restored to their original architectural design and feature a sitting area, a fireplace, desk, coffee station, mini bar, satellite TV, phone, WiFi, safe, iron & ironing board,  and hairdryer.
